Hazardous Materials Mitigation

Hazard mitigation is defined as actions taken to help minimize or eliminate damages and long-term risks caused by hazardous materials or natural disasters. Alpha-1 Technical Training & Consulting Services holds international certification that provides assistance in formulating effective mitigation plan that can break the repetitive cycle of disaster damages.

Alpha-1 Technical Training & Consulting Services recognizes that it is nearly impossible to eradicate hazmat incidences; however, with effective training and management we can reduce significantly the cause and severity of the damages.

We are all aware of the level of danger of HazMat operations. Therefore, it is imperative that all students understand the risk involved, their duties and responsibilities on the scene, when to step back, and lastly when to reach out for a much more specialized teams to take over.

Here are the levels of HazMat Training:

  1. Awareness - First responders at this level are individuals who are likely to witness or discover a hazardous substance upon release. They are trained to identify a hazardous material and its risk factors, recognize a release, and identify the material, and the need for additional resources. As stated by the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and different state OSHA programs, a responder at the Awareness Level must have:
    • Full comprehension of hazardous substances and the risks associated with them during an emergency
    • Clear grasp of the potential outcomes associated with an emergency created when hazardous substances are present
    • The ability to identify the presence of hazardous substances during an emergency
    • Full comprehension of the role of the first responder at the Awareness Level, including site security and control, and use of the local government's Emergency Response
  2. Operations Level – The purpose of this level is to act as an initial responder in situations where it involves the release of a hazardous substance and secure the affected area and possible casualties.
  3. Technician Level – A responder that specializes at a technical level who can do offensive action before and after the release of the hazardous substance for the purpose of controlling the situation.
